January 2011 e-newsletter
'Passionate People' is a monthly newsletter
from the desk of
Paula Smith - Speaker, Author, Trainer and
Coach.
Happy
New Year to you all. I cannot believe we are mid January
already. I thought I would slowly ease into 2012 but
everyone seems to be back in action and rearing to go quite
early this year so I am starting my “Make It Happen”
activities right now. Do you have a “Make It Happen” policy
for yourself? There is a saying: “There are people that make
things happen, others who wait for things to happen and others
who just wander what happened” Which one are you?
When I coach my business clients I ask what they are doing
to achieve their goals. Some just write them down, tell a few
people and think they are done. Wrong! Making your dreams come
true it about commitment to “Making it Happen”
Here a few of suggestions to “Make It Happen” that I use:
 |
Ensuring you don’t give up if the first few times
you don’t get it right. |
 |
Asking the right people for the right help |
 |
Being organised and professional |
 |
Being decisive about what you want |
 |
Letting others know what you are trying to
achieve |
 |
Being creative and innovative in your approach |
 |
Knowing when to stop or adjust your plan |
 |
Don’t accept “Can’t” just try another way
|
 |
Surround yourself with other make it happen type
people.
|
Make 2012 the Year of “Making it Happen” Don’t be one of
those who go through the whole year letting others control
your life or you will be left asking yourself at the end of
the year again “What happened?”

Presentation skills are a must have skill in today's competitive
business world.
Get the message
Key
Messages are critical in any presentation. You can only
determine what these key messages should be after
consultation with key people.
What are the needs of this target group?
What clear message do you want the audience to leave with
after the presentation?
Is there any history that I need to be aware of for this
target group?
How will the information be able to be implemented for
immediate results and long-term benefits?
Once you have met with your client or key personnel you
should have decided on one or maybe two or three strong key
messages (not more than three – unless you use an acronym)
that need to be the basis of your presentation. You cannot
begin to plan your presentation unless your key messages
have been determined.
Key messages form the basis of any presentation.

When introducing a new slide or picture allow participants
time to become mentally comfortable with the image.
According to Wolfe, 2001 because the eyes send millions of
signals per second to be processed in the visual centres of
the brain, the brain takes in more visually than any other
sense.
By the age of 15 the visual system of the brain is mature
so people can acquire complex visuals throughout their
lifetime. (Jensen 2001)
You should therefore use vibrant, interesting and engaging
visuals in your presentations if you want to get a point
across and for it to be remembered.
You may have heard of the Pyramid of Learning or the Cone
of Learning. It has been in classrooms around the world for
years as a diagram to explain how we learn best. Interestingly
enough the facts have never been substantiated.
